Lisa Meakins Aromatherapy Massage

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy uses natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical health. The oils can be used in a variety of ways, and with massage the oils are absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream to promote healing and the immune response.

Benefits of Aromatherapy massage

Aromatherapy benefits those in good health and those with health problems - it can help with muscular aches and pains, headaches, stress, PMT, digestive disorders, some symptoms of ME, depression, arthritis insomnia, and many more conditions. Aromatherapy is not an alternative to orthodox medicine and does not cure conditions but helps the body to find a natural way to optimal health.

How does Aromatherapy work?

Essential oils are absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin (and can also be inhaled). The nostrils are attached to a part of the brain called the limbic system, which in turn controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones.

Molecules inhaled/absorbed from the essential oils transmit messages to the limbic system, affecting heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system - each essential oil has different healing properties.

What can I expect from Aromatherapy Massage?

After an initial consultation, essential oils are selected for your specific needs. The consultation also allows you to ask any questions and helps me determine if a treatment is suitable – with some medical conditions treatment may not be recommended. Usually 2 or 3 oils are blended to create a balanced blend for treatment.

You will be left to undress to your underwear and get comfortable, and when you are on the massage couch covered with sheets/towels, I will return to begin the massage. A massage may focus on certain areas such as the back, neck and shoulders or a full body treatment needs a minimum of 75 minutes as the back, legs, feet, arms, hands, neck, shoulders, face and scalp are massaged. After treatment you will be given time to dress and have some water before floating back to continue your day!

For the following 24 hours it is recommended to drink plenty of water and rest as much as possible.
